About Service Learning

Marymount University Physical Therapy Students have the amazing opportunity to experience a different culture from their own over a two-week period at the end of their second clinical practicum. For the past 6 years, third-year physical therapy students have traveled to Costa Rica and provided physical therapy services to under-served populations in various settings including orphanages, nursing homes, and rehabilitation clinics. As the projects in Costa Rica are becoming self-sufficient, this year Marymount students will also expand their services to those in Nicaragua.

Our medical mission gives physical therapy students a unique global clinical experience that serves not only the patients in need, but also provides much needed medical supplies and emphasizes caregiver and patient education. In order to afford these services, the Class of 2017 has been fundraising, collecting supplies, and developing documents to bring to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the past year.

In the first week, groups of students will either travel to Costa Rica or Nicaragua to perform various physical therapy-related service projects in their assigned countries. In the second week, students from Nicaragua will join the rest of their classmates in Costa Rica to further complete sustainable projects. We are so very excited to begin our journey and invite you to join us by following our story!
